What is rare, which applies to most contemporary books, is finding one in fine condition, book and dust jacket. In fact those in only good or poorer condition or the common Bookclub editions will have little value, other than reading copies.
The books have to be fine, but the dust jackets in particular have to have no tears or damage and the spine title colour has to be true, not faded, matching the cover colours. In fact we price our copies purely on this basis. USA had its own first edition as did other language publishers. The question then is can you tell the difference between clipped UK and clipped international dust jacket? No, thus unclipped is the only ay you can tell. We believe all newer printings/ editions of Tolkien books will not be rare. Any value as collectibles will come do to them being in as-new, fine condition, no marks, damage or alterations. As books do age, the spines colours fade and some become mouldy, finding fine condition copies will be more difficult.
