The Lord of the Rings by J. 1988 One Volume Edition / First Printing thus. The Fellowship of the Ring. The Return of the King. This edition marks, surprisingly, the very first time The Lord of the Rings was released in a trade hardcover one volume format. It had previously been published as a deluxe one volume edition using India paper and as a book club edition under Allen & Unwin, but never in a proper trade format. This edition went through only three printings (1988, 1989 & 1990) and features a ribbon bookmark, striped headband and a dust-jacket with artwork by the late Roger Garland. The illustration of Barad-dûr/Mordor was first used for the cover of the British 1983 paperback one volume edition but did not appear on a hardcover edition until this edition. The maps, usually included at the end of The Lord of the Rings, were accidentally left out of the first printing and reinstated for the second.
