This beloved book has been printed in many formats and sizes since first printed on bright white India paper in 1969, and then again in 1972 (this copy). The three volumes in one are only one inch thick and have been well protected by the black slip cover. The buckram book cover has the Tolkien depiction of the Numenorean throne with "Elendil" in tengwar, stamped in gilt, silver and green. The edges are speckled light green and the beautiful endpapers are black and grey.
