For sale is the 1979 boxed set entitled'Stories from the Third Age' which includes The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in three volumes. This is the third edition of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, first published in 1979.

The printings in this set (1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd respectively) are the first to have been included in this set (later sets have been seen with all four books in their 2nd printing). The photograph of Tolkien on the box is by Billett Potter. This collection of books is one of a set of three collections that were published in 1979 (the first included The Lord of the Rings alone and the second was issued with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion).

The Third Age (as I'm sure is known to anyone looking at this listing) refers to the'fictional' time period that the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place during the Fourth Age spoiler alert!!
